The Combination of Communication and Navigation Systems and Applications in Traffic Telematics

With Digital Video Broadcasting (DVB) technology, high data rates (30 – 50 Mbit/s) can be supported. Using terrestrial radio as a transmission medium, small antennas are sufficient for reception, even in moving vehicles and mobile terminals. Using DVB, not only digital television programmes can be transmitted, but also any data content based on Internet standards. Combining DVB broadcast technology with cellular radio networks (GSM/HSCSD/GPRS or UMTS), a radio-based communication network can be set up, enabling the transmission of high data rates from a central location to the individual user. For non-mobile usage, wireless LAN technology is available as an economic alternative. In general, multicast protocols ensure efficient use of the available bandwidth in radio networks. The Global Positioning System (GPS), and in future the European navigation system GALILEO, provide accurate positioning information. Combining navigation technology with a communication system (DVB-T or WLAN), broadband interactive services for mobile terminals are envisaged. Based on this combination, it is possible to support novel applications, for example for traffic telematics.
